Workout: Bike Commute

Monday 8/4: Bike commute to work. 32 minutes x 2, tempo pace

The Monday ride to work is becoming a nice routine. I like starting the week this way. Since I ended last week with a ride on Saturday, I did a little better fitting workouts in. But it's time to set a new goal of some sort to get motivated and back into a more regular schedule...

Monday 7/28: Bike commute to work. 32 minutes x 2, tempo pace

Coming off a week of sloth, I hope to get back to a three workout per week pace starting this week. Fantastic weather today, so I eased back into things with a tempo ride to work on the commuter machine.

Monday 7/14: Bike commute to work. 20 miles total, 32 minutes x 2, tempo pace

Rode the road bike to work this morning after dropping Les & Lily off at the train station for their big Chicago trip. As it is Bastille Day and the first big mountain finish day in the TdF, seems more than appropriate to ride today.

Tuesday 7/1: Bike commute to work. 20 miles total, 32 minutes x 2, tempo- pace

Chose the road bike to commute on today. A little treat before my birthday. Took the back way, so it was just a bit longer than my usual route but took the same amount of time since the roadie is quicker.

Lovely weather to ride to work today. The next few days look to be rainy, so I wanted to take advantage of today's opportunity.

Friday 4/18: Bike commute to work. 32 minutes x 2, tempo pace

It's my first ride to work of the season; it's so nice outside, it was impossible to pass up on this Friday morning! The picture above is pretty close to the model that I ride, but not quite exact. The make is the same (Raleigh), but the model I have is now about 7 years old and not in production any more.

Riding the commuter bike makes for a good workout because it is easily 10 pounds heavier than my road bike without any cargo. A much more upright seating position means more wind resistance, and I don't have clipless pedals on this bike. I also carry my backpack and a change of clothes in my wheel-mounted bag. The route is 9 miles one way. And it takes me anywhere from 30-35 minutes, depending on traffic and wind. I tend to mash the whole way to maximize the benefit.

It's a great way to get a "sneaky" workout...an hour of solid effort on the bike without eating up a huge chunk of family or work time.
